If you must buy treats... the rule of thumb is to look for the country of origin of the ingredients. Obviously... anything originating in China should be avoided.
My advice to manufacturers is as follows....
Each day you allow your product which originated in China, to stay on the market you are actively poisoning and killing pets. If that is not enough to warrant a voluntary pull, ponder this... Any manufacturer or seller of these products is destroying their own consumer base. As the public becomes more and more educated, any possible good faith and trust that you endeavored to gain with your wasted advertising dollars evaporates and more and more consumers will simply walk away and choose to home feed and will NEVER go back to prepared food for their beloved pets.
Oh yes, one more thing, as the legal process in the consumer lawsuits against manufacturers, advances... guess what sellers and resellers? YOU will eventually be joined as necessary parties and your inaction and or greed will be testimony of your complicity. Where are your risk managers? Your legal advisers? YOU SHOULD BE WALKING AWAY NOW! There is nothing "smart" about having this crap on your shelves NOTHING. If you allow it you are pet dumb....and people stupid.
THROW THE CRAP OUT and WRITE IT OFF!
To the consumers: IF YOU STOP BUYING THIS CACA, THEY WILL STOP SELLING IT!

Thanks for this post! It really is so scary how such a small percentage of pet owners seem to be educating themselves on this subject, almost as if it won't ever hit home until it happens to them. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was in a pet supply store to pick up some cat litter. I wandered over to the dog section just to see what they were carrying these days, and to my surprise I saw shelves and shelves full of a brand of kibble I knew had been recalled the week before for salmonella contamination. When I questioned the manager he said they would refund the purchase price of any bag that was returned. When I asked why they weren't just pulling it off the shelves, he said they hadn't gotten all of it pulled yet. I said, well, it looks like you haven't even started ... the shelves are almost completely full. He had nothing to say to me, just stood there staring, so eventually I set down my cat litter and walked out of the store. It's so frustrating.
Tucker, you know how angry I am... I have shouting about this for 4 yrs... please feel free to copy the Butcher's Bill and post it and re posted and share it.
