Odds, ends and whatnots

First of all, why is it odds and ENDS? Where are the evens? It should be odds and evens. It would make more sense. no?

We are watching momma "working". She calls it working. I can't say she is weeding because what she is pulling out of the ground with a vengeance is not weeds. It is mint. She calls it "THE INVADER". I actually like the smell of the invader. I was going to roll in it, but...that much fury out of momma scared me off. You know, I am a trauma survivor. I once saw momma kill. Yuh. It was awful. It was NO accident. She saw the victim, told it to get out and when it failed to do so, she whacked it dead.

That fly never had a chance.

I think I stayed away from momma for a couple of days after that.

Watching her rip out the mint, reminds me of that incident. Apparently the mint had dared to go into momma's tomatoes and zucchini blossoms and herbs. Not smart. That woman loves her herbs. I guess I do too. My mouth waters when I smell lavender or rosemary or thyme... I think chicken. I think over roasted potatoes.

Well, we are just going to watch her do her thing. Cinnamon mint. Bye. Orange mint. Bye. Chocolate mint. Bye....

Oh she is leaving some. On the other side of the yard. Exiled. Ohhhhh... This is serious.

BTW, Mrs and Mrs Dove are doing fine. Momma even got them a new birdbath. [Can I point out the fact that I DO NOT HAVE MY OWN BATH????]

quietly waiting for the end of the rampage...how is your garden?

New tenants. I guess

In the purple crepe myrtle, just over the pool steps, by the rail, we have new tenants. The nest is deep inside the tree, shaded by the leaves and beautifully sited by the grape arbor. [No momma, no grapes for you this year, but the birds thank you for having gotten rid of that pesky bushy tailed rat] Now, these are birds, I think. NOT chickens. But what kind? All I know is that there are two of them in a nest and it looks crowded.

Momma says they are mourning doves! "Mourning Doves are the most frequently hunted species in North America" Hunted??? No way! Well guys I grant you asylum! You are safe.
WE RESCUE!!! So, carry on!

Now watching momma climb on the bench to get this picture was funny. Watching her climb down was even funnier. Picture momma wet, in her bathing suit balancing her camera and snapping pictures. Hahahahaha. But at least I am validated, there is something in that tree! I told them!

Momma, please put out some millet and water for Mr and Mrs Dove, please? {Do they own a soap company or something?}

Just asking....

DOGFIGHTING DNA DATABASE HELPS NAB CRIMINALS

Getty Images
It’s rare to catch a dog fighter in the middle of an actual fight, so when investigators are trying to convict suspected dog fighters, they need all the evidence they can get.

That’s where DNA and -- even better -- a dogfighting DNA database come into play.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society of Missouri and the Louisiana SPCA have just established such a dogfighting database. This international resource matches genetic samples to determine relationships between dogs seized in dogfighting rings. Information coming out of this database ultimately pinpoints people involved in breeding, training and operating dog fights.

The Canine Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) is operated by the Veterinary Genetics Lab at the University of California, Davis.

When fighting dogs are seized in a raid, their DNA is collected with either a simple cheek swab, or from other DNA on scene, like blood. The investigator submits the DNA profile to the U.C. Davis lab and the genetic profile is uploaded into the confidential database. If the genetic makeup links to a dog or a case in the system, the necessary authorities are alerted.

The database’s goal is to help the criminal justice system investigate and prosecute dogfighting cases using 21st century technology.

“Dogfighters can’t get around DNA. They can’t get rid of it without getting rid of their dogs,” says Dr. Melinda Merck, Senior Director of Veterinary Forensics at the American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “We have to stay current on the science and forensic side, because dog fighters are very savvy. We have to stay one step ahead.”

Authorities decided to establish this database after linking 100 dogs to fighting lineages in the nation’s largest dogfighting raid in 2009. Those 100 dogs linked directly back to breeders and as Merck puts it, three people were directly profiled because of the DNA connections.

Merck believes that if you can link lineages of fighting dogs slowly, one by one, you can pinpoint dogfighting breeders and trainers, and eventually shut them down. After all, there are only so many established, champion fighting lines. Getty Images

The FBI uses a similar database for violent crimes: a computerized archive that stores DNA profiles from criminal offenders and crime scenes that's used in criminal and missing person investigations.

In court, these resources can help prosecute dog fighters, since DNA enhances the case and can make it bigger by linking one scene to another and linking people to dogs.

Investigators aren’t required to submit the DNA, but animal cruelty authorities encourage them to do it.

Dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states. Since dogfighting is illegal and underground, there are no official statistics on how many people are involved in dogfighting in the United States, but estimates range in the thousands.

For more information about dog fighting or to find out how to report a dog fighting incident, check out the ASPCA's website.

waiting for brioche

Here I am sitting pretty, being polite and sweet. I am also being patient.

I am not making a fuss, and.. I still have my ribbons on that Miss Margie put on me yesterday. I am doing everything right, because.. see, up there... BRIOCHE is cooling. And I want some. NO, I NEED some. I love brioche.

I have been smelling it for a long time. In fact, the smell woke me up. It did. Now, I get to have some as soon as it is cool. Momma will make me morning foam and that will be perfect with fresh brioche. So, I sit and wait.

This better pay off.

Saturday schedule

My friend Samantha, one of the other GABE giveaway winners, has a lovely post on her candle. Check it out here. I have to tell you, JD loves tall golden girls and he has spent a great deal of time looking at Samantha's blog. Keep in mind, JD is a short curly white Bichon... with a lot of ambition apparently. Anyway, Samantha, I am glad you received your candle and I am glad you are enjoying it.

I am going to the groomer today. I am NOT happy about it, but I guess my rubbing myself all over the deck, sort of tipped the scale and she, whose name I shall not speak [because I am mad at her- momma of course] made the decision that we are all getting groomed today.

I suppose, I might post pics later, it depends on how Miss Margie does with my cut and blow dry.
Oh ok... yea. Good point JD. Momma, time for you to get groomed, I can see some gray and you need a cut... Should we call Miss Lolly for you????? Hmmmm??? Good for the goose and good for the gander and all.

Well, ciao ciao for now,
going to live it up while I can and roll in something out there.

Pippi Goes on a Tear

The Doggie Diaries - Pippi Goes on a Tear

Dalmatian Pipi tears mattress Anna Westhoff

Each week, Ben Westhoff shares the ups and downs of owning Pippi, the one-year-old dalmatian he and his wife Anna adopted as a puppy in late 2009, and the first dog Ben's ever had.

Anna wrote this week's column.

Last week, on Pippi's first birthday, we basked in the glory of her many strides forward. Today, we're focusing on her few steps back.

Our beloved pooch had herself one doozy of a weekend. On Sunday, she managed to unzip and un-stuff her doggy bed. Again. But unlike the three or four times she'd done this before, this time she piled the remains in the middle of the kitchen and peed on them for good measure.

The poor bed -- which I bought just six months ago because it matched her cute spots! -- had to be put out to pasture.

That same day, I found a big, blue replacement dog bed for the affordable price of $24.99. Pippi appeared to love this one, and spent a peaceful night on it. Ben even had a little nap with her there.

But on Tuesday morning, after her romp outdoors and her breakfast, I turned my back for five minutes and Pippi proceeded to rip out the seam of her new bed, unzip it, yank out the stuffing and spread it all over the kitchen. I found her rolling around in the stuffing like Demi Moore rolling in cash in the movie "Indecent Proposal."

The scene was both endearing and infuriating! I wanted to scold, but I had to laugh.

When it comes to "keeping things nice" around Pippi, those feelings of frustration and amusement are constantly battling each other. Pippi seems to sense when something is new or fancy, and her instinct is to "leave her mark" on it, i.e. scuff and/or tear it up. Kitchen towels, dog beds, bikinis (yes, bikinis); our beloved Pippi will not rest until she's had her way with all of them.

Parents of small children often claim: "I can't have anything nice anymore; they destroy everything!" And we know how they feel. We want to hear from you readers. Do any of you pet owners have trouble balancing a rip-roaring pup and your prized possessions? And how weird is it that she demolishes her own bed?

Follow "The Doggie Diaries" on Twitter.

Dear momma, this should make you appreciate the fact that all I do with my bed is "travel". I move it around, from room to room. I play with it. I LOVE it. But the next time you find yourself whining about where I left my bed... come back and read this.
I love you momma,

canine influenza, or H3N8 vaccine APPROVED

This from the LA Times:

USDA licenses first-ever canine influenza vaccine
June 15, 2010 | 7:11 pm

A vaccine to protect dogs from canine influenza, or H3N8, has received the U.S. Department of Agriculture's stamp of approval.

The company Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health released the vaccine, called Nobivac, last year. Since then, Nobivac had been in limited use during a conditional period while additional safety tests were conducted, according to Intervet veterinarian and technical service manager Dr. Lisa Saabye.

Canine influenza is a highly contagious virus that was first identified in greyhounds at a Florida racing track in 2004. Since the virus was discovered, the USDA has noted outbreaks in 33 states, including several in California.

Infected dogs can exhibit symptoms similar to those for kennel cough, including cough, fever, nasal discharge, appetite loss and fatigue. The virus is spread primarily through infected dogs' respiratory secretions, so dogs that spend a lot of time in the company of other dogs (in boarding kennels, doggie day-care facilities, animal shelters and other places where animals are housed in close quarters) are most at risk. There's no evidence that the virus has ever spread from a dog to a human.

Learn more about the vaccine at The Times' health blog, Booster Shots.

-- Lindsay Barnett

editor's note: Learn more about this here:
note: this is Nobivac[R]
there is also Nobivac Lyme which is a different vaccine.

Yo Dawg, This Blind Dog Has a Seeing Eye Dog

Verona In VIRGINIA

JULIET
By whose direction found’st thou out this place?
[Is she kidding???duh... the Sunday ads... there is a sale going on! By daddy's NUVI directions!]

ROMEO
By love, that first did prompt me to inquire.
He lent me counsel and I lent him eyes.
I am no pilot. Yet, wert thou as far
As that vast shore washed with the farthest sea,
I would adventure for such merchandise.

[OMD... the only love he knows is the love of treats!!! What is going on???]

JULIET
Thou know’st the mask of night is on my face,
Else would a maiden blush bepaint my cheek
For that which thou hast heard me speak tonight.
Fain would I dwell on form. Fain, fain deny
What I have spoke. But farewell compliment!
Dost thou love me? I know thou wilt say “ay,”
And I will take thy word. Yet if thou swear’st
Thou mayst prove false. At lovers' perjuries,
They say, Jove laughs. O gentle Romeo,
If thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully.
Or if thou think’st I am too quickly won,
I’ll frown and be perverse and say thee nay,
So thou wilt woo. But else, not for the world.
In truth, fair Montague, I am too fond,
And therefore thou mayst think my 'havior light.
But trust me, gentleman, I’ll prove more true
Than those that have more coying to be strange.
I should have been more strange, I must confess,
But that thou overheard’st, ere I was 'ware,
My true love’s passion. Therefore pardon me,
And not impute this yielding to light love,
Which the dark night hath so discovered.

[Shakespeare in CARE-A-LOT???? Are we kidding??? I am not sure I can take this emotionally.. Who made VERA WANG Juliet??? I mean did I miss an audition or
casting call or something???]

ROMEO
Lady, by yonder blessèd moon I vow,
That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops—

[Is is sooooo over acting!]

JULIET
O, swear not by the moon, th' inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circle orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.
[cute costume, I guess...]

ROMEO
What shall I swear by?
[GAG]

JULIET
     Do not swear at all.
Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self,
Which is the god of my idolatry,
And I’ll believe thee
[Fool... believing him- ha!]

ROMEO
 If my heart’s dear love—

JULIET
Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee,
I have no joy of this contract tonight.
It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden,
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be
Ere one can say “It lightens.” Sweet, good night.
This bud of love, by summer’s ripening breath,
May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet.
Good night, good night! As sweet repose and rest
Come to thy heart as that within my breast.

ROMEO
O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?

JULIET
What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?

ROMEO
Th' exchange of thy love’s faithful vow for mine.

[This is making me queasy... this could turn a whole generation away from Shakespeare!!!!
Time to go..... ICK
I should have been Juliet!]

Am I the only one who is for ever waiting for my family to be ready?

They said we were going for a WALK. I am most cooperative at the prospect of any WALK. I am not stupid. I got ready immediately. I quietly let them put a leash on me. I sat down and I have been WAITING for ever (feels like 21 yrs) and 20 minutes. [Yes, rule against perpetuity model applies here- for all you legal nerds].

One needs to get tissues, the other is looking for his cell phone, then they have to make sure the tidy bag dispenser is full... the one has to tinkle... OMD... that ls what walks are for! You 2 leggeds have it all backwards. Can we go already???

I am aging here. I am also stressing out. And if you wait much longer it will be too hot to go for a walk! Get my portable water bowl, you know I don't drink from communal anything!!! Move it, move it move it... Momma says I act like Sgt. Carter. [Who is Sgt. Carter? What is a Gomer Pyle???] What ever.... LET'S GOOOOOOO already!

There are smells to be sniffed out there, doggies to greet... and you are standing between me and my social life and... now I HAVE to go tinkle!!!
Doing the pipi dance... Oh that got them going! [next time... I am short cutting straight to the pipi dance....]

Finally...

Byeeee ya'll going for my constitutional!

Have you ever noticed how hot it can get inside a car on a summer day — far hotter than it is outside? That's because a car acts like a greenhouse, trapping the sun's heat.

A study by the Animal Protection Institute showed that even moderately warm temperatures outside can quickly lead to deadly temperatures inside a closed car.

The study, conducted during a local heat wave, compared an outside temperature of a shaded area with the inside of an automobile in three states: fully closed, with four windows cracked, and with two windows cracked. Inside temperatures were measured with an indoor/outdoor thermometer and an oven thermometer (both readings are given). All temperatures use the Fahrenheit scale.

(both thermometers showed identical readings)

Other studies show similar results:

  • San Francisco State University - April 2007 fact sheet utilizing data from a Golden Gate Weather Services study
  • Another study reprinted from the Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society
  • A study from Stanford University shows that even on comparatively cool days, such as 72 degrees, a car's internal temperature will rocket to 116 degrees within 60 minutes. And keeping the windows open a crack hardly slows the rise at all."

after the rain....
