Well well. Thank you auntie Jodi.

It seems my family is not alone in this weird ritual that makes no sense to me. I am passive about it. I just go limp. They seem to get their jollies off of lifting me up as if I was some sort of offering.

JD will struggle some, but eventually he will let them do it. but just for a second. The Wendy... nahhhh forgetaboutit. She is not about to let them lift her like that no matter. Smart girl.

Here I thought they were peculiar. Now it turns out that they are peculiarly "hoooooman". Two leggeds. Go figure.

By the way, usually this ritual is followed by a serious belly rub and usually it is NOT momma doing it. Last time... it was Adam who can really lift and get good height. I keep my eyes on his head and that keeps me from getting scared. Dowi did it over the bed... Daddy... tried and gave up. Momma knows better.

People, two leggeds, buy a doll and do this, we four leggeds do not want to be your "offerings" your "tendered prized herd presentations"... seriously... get a life!

The move comes as the FDA faces growing pressure from consumers and lawmakers to address rising numbers of illnesses blamed on the treats.
Robin Pierre, a co-founder of “Animal Parents Against Pet Treats Made in China,” has collected more than 7,000 signatures urging on a petition urging the FDA to take action and more than 2,600 on a petition taking Nestle Purina to task, she said.
Pierre, 49, of Pine Bush, N.Y., believes Waggin’ Train chicken jerky treats were responsible for the sudden death last fall of her previously health 2-year-old pug, Bella, who developed kidney failure.
“While I am happy that the FDA is in China investigating now, it never should have taken this long. Too many of our innocent and voiceless companions suffered horrific deaths and many will forever be dealing with the repercussions of falling victim to corporate greed. No animal should have ever had to die because of a ‘treat’”, she said.
In February, Brown and Kucinich sent letters to the FDA asking the agency to step up testing and inspections of the China-made products. After a meeting with Kucinich, the FDA stepped up its investigation, spokesman said, and traveled to manufacturing facilities in China."

Trim your baby back ribs, then send daddy to buy more... like 3 more racks: 


Rub your rack of ribs with your fav mustard


then sprinkle with dry rub: [you need to make more of this because daddy brought more ribs!]
 
2 Tablespoons brown sugar, 
2 Tablespoon paprika, 
2 Tablespoons berbere`   [or use cayenne, we like them with a kick]
2 tsp. salt,
2 tsp. celery seed
2 tsp bay seasoning
1 tsp. fresh minced garlic

Wrap and let them sit for two hours in the refrigerator. 

Take them out of the refrigerator to come to room temp- about 15 minutes.

Place a small pan of water on bottom rack of the grill on the side. [moist cooking...]
 
Place ribs on the TOP rack of  your grill at 220 degree for 2 1/2 hours, water still below. 

Once the ribs are just about done, take them off the grill, paint them with your wet BBQ sauce. Pop the grill to the highest temp you can and once it is heated, put the ribs on the bottom rack long enough to char and score and caramelize the BBQ sauce coating.


Serve and make sure you have enough for everyone!


Wait... I copied the  BBQ sauce here:

• 1 cup ketchup
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 cup molasses
• 2 tablespoons brown sugar
• 1/4 cup chopped onion
• 1 chopped shallot
• 1 seeded chopped jalapeno 
• 1 tablespoon minced garlic
• 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper or berbere`
• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 1 (5.5 ounce) can tomato juice
• 2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
• 1 cup of good bourbon

Directions

1. In a blender or food processor, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, brown sugar, onion, garlic, shallot, ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon juice, tomato juice, bourbon and liquid smoke flavoring. Puree until smooth, and transfer to a saucepan.
2. Place saucepan on the stove over medium heat. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for about 1 hour, or to desired thickness. 
3.  It keeps, so make some.

This post is for the four legged heroes who are working hard trying to locate victims of the earthquake in Reggio Emilia, Italy. I wanted to recognize their invaluable contribution to the recovery efforts.







Aftershocks are still occurring. Areas that are badly damaged have been designated as "zone rosse" meaning red zones. To insure safety, people and pets have been displaced from all red zones. They are not allowed to go home, and many have no home to go back to. How awful is that?
 
You know, I have experienced a hurricane, or two... a few tornadoes, momma knows about earthquakes, she mutters "Mondo Cane"  [no I have no idea. She says ... movie, then she gets all weird... so we don't talk about it...] None of these things are any fun. They are messy, nasty, inconvenient and deadly.

I guess I am an addict. I love belly rubs. But most of all I love to get my belly rubbed while great music is playing in the background. Ok, I will come clean. There is more to this story. Blame momma. She always speaks to me in Italian. I associate the language with home, comfort, warmth. And these guys can deliver some sweet Italian. After all, I am just conditioned to love the language and the music. So it's normal, natural and simply reasonable to think of Dimples -My own nickname for Ignazio as I fall asleep. Do you think he has a dog? What about Piero? I bet he would relax if I was near him. Gianluca looks like a good snuggler. Of course they sing in English too, see? Yes, that's a more acceptable word. Security. Like an insurance policy. The Wendy just said something interesting. She said we do have a second family. ???? Ohhhh, yea, right. Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue. Yes, I suppose. The bad news is that they all drank the "Coolade". There is no leverage power there. They preach from the same sermon. Thank "dogness" momma made our walk short. The ride was nice, but the walk was too hot. I hate to be out there schvitzing, and she would not let us near the one interesting thing, a  sleeping bird.  And you know what?  I don't have the energy to fight "Miss Leave it, leave it, leave it..." So I left it.  Now I am snuggled watching cartoons. I do love air conditioning.

Nestlé Purina Voluntarily Recalls Single Lot of Therapeutic Canned Cat Food Due to A Low Level of Thiamine (Vitamin B1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 11, 2012 - Nestlé Purina PetCare (NPP) is voluntarily recalling one specific lot of its Purina Veterinary Diets® OM Overweight Management canned cat food, available through veterinarians in the U.S. and Canada.  This precautionary measure is being taken in response to one consumer complaint received by FDA.  Analytical testing of the product sample by FDA indicated a low level of thiamine (Vitamin B1).  Purina has received no other complaints of thiamine-related or any other health issues related to this product. 

Only cans with the following “Best By” date and production code shown are included in this voluntary recall:

Cats fed this affected lot exclusively for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency.  Thiamine is essential for cats.  Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature.  Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss.  In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, falling, circling and seizures.  Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs.  If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
This product was distributed to veterinary clinics between June, 2011 and May, 2012 throughout the U.S. and Canada.  The product is not sold in retail stores.
No additional Purina cat or dog products are involved in this voluntary recall.  No other Purina Veterinary Diets® products are involved, and only Purina Veterinary Diets® OM canned cat food which match the “Best By” dates and production code above are included in this recall.
Consumers who have purchased Purina Veterinary Diets® OM canned cat food cans with these specific “Best By” Date and Production Codes should discontinue feeding the product, and discard it.

and... is your MULCH safe? Cocoa mulch is as toxic as chocolate. Yes, do check what your mulch contains...Some have dyes, chemicals to prevent rot and infestation and are quite toxic. And even a "safe mulch" ingested by a playful puppy become an intestinal obstruction which can cause death. Pretty rocks, are much safer and easier to maintain. And they hose off clean! And it is an easy do it yourself project. And you can really let your creativity show off here. Everything from colors to design. For some ideas, go here:

And while on topic...of DANGERS... and TOXICITY...... dusting off the old list of foods that are toxic to dogs:

CHOCOLATE: All chocolate is bad for dogs. – dark chocolate, especially baker’s chocolate, is the worst.  When a dog eats chocolate, the dog has basically ingested POISON. Time is of the essence. Once it starts breaking down into blood stream you are fighting multi system failure and death. Chocolate contains a substance called Theobromine (similar to caffeine), which in toxic doses can cause heart attacks, blood pressure spikes, retinal damge, kidney damage, death. As little as 2 oz baker’s chocolate can be fatal for a small dog. If you suspect your dog has gotten into chocolate call your vet immediately.

GRAPES/RAISINS: Always TOXIC. Grapes and raisins are TOXIC fruit for dogs. They  cause acute renal (kidney) failure. As little as a handful at a time can be deadly.

ONIONS: A substance in onions, disulfide, is harmless to humans but toxic to not only dogs but cats, horses, sheep and cattle. It causes hemolytic anemia, and as little as 2 slices a week can damage red blood cells, impairing their ability to carry oxygen. NOTE: Garlic and onion and shallots are in the same family, while small amounts of garlic will not harm your dog, too much is not good.

LIVER: In small amounts liver is very good for your dog (less than 3 servings a week). Large amounts cause vitamin A toxicity (hypervitaminosis A). This can lead to bone problems, weight loss and anorexia. Also, never feed liver if your dog is taking vitamin A supplements, and always cook it before feeding.

BONES: Caution here. Raw meaty bones and chicken bones are prone to splinter and lodge in the throat, or worse, the intestines, in which case they can perforate the lining causing internal bleeding and possibly death. This doesn’t mean “no bones” – ask the butcher for soup bones, bring water to a full boil then cook the bones for approximately 20 minutes (depending on size). Raw food proponents encourage freezing the bones first to kill off bacteria.Obviously your source for raw food is very important.

RAW EGGS: Cooked eggs are a very healthy treat for dogs, raw egg whites contain a protein called Avidin. This protein depletes your dog of B vitamins, specifically Biotin, which is essential to growth and coat condition. Also, raw eggs may contain bacteria, such as Salmonella.

RAW DOUGH: Never give yeasty raw dough to a dog. the yeast releases gases as it expands. this can lead to bloat, which is deadly in dogs.
Yeast also ferments, which would be the same as feeding your dog alcohol.. too much alcohol in a dog is the same as too much for a human.. dogs can just as easily suffer alcohol poisoning.

RAW MEAT/POULTRY: Once again bacteria are the main problem – Salmonella and Clostridium, both can be very serious and costly to treat. IF you are doing raw foods, the safety of your food chain lies in your source. If you have any doubts... cook it first. NOTE: Best to avoid pork, especially bacon (which contains sodium nitrate).

MILK AND MILK PRODUCTS: FYI, 50% of dogs are lactose intolerant (just like people!) – they don’t produce the enzyme Lactase, therefore they are unable to break down Lactose (milk sugar). This can cause gas, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Goat cheeses are safe as they do not contain lactase.

NUTS: Walnuts can cause gastroenteritis and are considered poisonous to dogs. Macadamia nuts contain an unknown compound, which can cause muscle tremors, weakness and paralysis of the hindquarters – luckily these symptoms last a short time. In general, nuts are high in phosphorus and may contribute to the formation of bladder stones. NOTE: Peanuts are a legume, “from the earth”, not grown on trees. They are not harmful when used in small amounts.

POTATO: Cooked and mashed potatoes are good for dogs, but green potatoes contain. poisonous alkaloids  called Solanum which are toxic to both people and dogs.

TOMATO PLANTS: Stems and leaves contain oxalates, which can cause bladder stones. NOTE: The fruit itself is not the culprit, however high amounts of vitamin C can cause gastrointestinal distress.

RHUBARB: This plant (especially the leaves) also contains oxalates.

TURKEY SKIN: Known to cause acute Pancreatitis in dogs because it is so high in fats. Would you eat 3 sticks of butter in one sitting and be ok? No.... soooo.... just discard that skin.

PIPS: Found in the seeds of apples, pears, plums, peaches and apricots – ALL CONTAIN ARSENIC!

NUTMEG: Is a hallucinogen in dogs.

BABY FOOD: Just be careful that the baby food you are feeding doesn’t contain onion powder – some do. See onion poisoning for more information.

MUSHROOMS: as in people... wild mushrooms are best left IN THE WILD. Generally not something you want to feed your dog because of the fungal properties...

BROCCOLI: There has been a bit of confusion where broccoli is concerned. Broccoli is very good for dogs, however, if the daily intake exceeds more than 10% of the animals diet – problems can occur. The toxic substance is isothiocyanate and can cause gastrointestinal irritation.


Well, this is just a start. BE SAFE not SORRY
