Hi there, I came across your website while looking up Bichon Frise info. Silvie is a beautiful girl. May I ask how you keep her eye area from staining and also if it's true you need to brush Bichons for at least 30 minutes every single day? :) Thanks!
Sena, Thank you, Silvie and The Wendy are rescued dogs. Silvie came home with heavy duty stains You can see her pic at rescue http://www.silvieon4.com/2012/05/madaleine-deficiency-and-consequences.html. 1. we get our face washed at night and in the am. That cuts the bacteria build up that causes staining. Eye goo, gets cleaned before it becomes an issue. It is just hygiene. 2. we get a home cooked diet. No artificial caca, no coloring... 3.we acidify the drinking water with one tbsp of plain white vinegar which changes the body's PH over time. No yeasty nasties for us.
And as far as brushing, JD hates to be brushed, he is all boy, but the girls think that is fab and will gladly let you brush and offer their bellies immediately.
Thank you! You did and are doing a fabulous job with them. We are still trying to decide between a Maltese or Bichon but I'm leaning towards Bichon b/c numerous people have told me they have more stable temperaments. I'll be sure to check the shelters and rescues for Bichons or Maltese, whichever we end up with. You don't happen to have experience with both, do you? :)
They are cousins. Bichons are cuddlers, they are truly lap dogs and they are affectionate. Where are you? There are many good reputable rescue groups that specialize in each breed. Like... Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue. Look for someone local, ask about temperament and history and be prepared to fall madly in love. But realize that having a Bichon is like having a 3 year old. Curious, playful, loving, and if you get one like Silvieon4... a diva. Maltese are very sweet as well, a little more standoffish and just remember, what you put in a dog time wise, is what you get out of a dog. I socialize them, I expose them to everything, from elevators to fountains, to travel to stores, to people, zoo animals etc. Like a 3 year old. Mine hate boredom, but love being on the go. I like them tired and "melted" at night. Do look at the archives in this blog, lots of great info on nutrition, medical, vaccines specially the don'ts... and tons of pics. You will see that having a dog or 3 can be loads of fun. Also be aware that female Bichons are dominant and that they do like men. Male Bichons tend to bond with their momma a lot more. This is not true for Silvie who apparently has be wrapped around her paw and her daddy is her property. Feel free to ask any questions and I will gladly fill you in.
