Operation Spice

I love that name!!!
Chesapeake Animal Control suggests a habanero sauce be applied to keep squirrels away.. indeed... habanero...

Here is a local recipe that is said to work wonders:
Make up a concoction of mostly Murphy's Oil Soap, hot sauce and habanero pepper and spray it around plants, damaged parts of trees and wires to keep the squirrel damage at bay. You'll need to vary the amount of hot sauce and cayenne based on effectiveness but figure that nine out of 10 parts of the mixture is oil soap. This mixture will wash off when it rains and should be reapplied every couple of days. Apparently the hot sauce provides the vinegar bite.
Bushy tailed rats also supposedly hate vinegar... Mhhh
I can work with this. Putting on my chef's hat.
I asked the Wendy to join me in the preparation of this concoction.

JD is working on the momma. We need her thumbs to operate the sprayer thingie. And she has to buy stuff.... you will see what stuff....He is "charmifying" her. Trust me. He has this in the bag.

Now back to the "RECIPE." There are habaneros and there are habaneros. An ordinary habanero measures a mere 350,000 on the Scoville Heat Unit. [the OMD this stuff burns to death- scale]

But what I want is a Red Savina Habanero Pepper (580,000 SHU). This is not a mere burn. This is a take no prisoner total scorch. That is what I want and need. We can dispense with the hot sauce and go for the straight vinegar, and... a generous handful of salt. Yes salt. I don't care about the bushy tailed rat's blood pressure! I am a chef. Not some hack. I have read about fermenting the concoction and I agree. A couple of days in the sun should make it just perfect.
Obviously on the day of spray none of us will be around. I am thinking ride. 1. I don't want my pawprints on this. Retaliation could be nasty. Momma is better equipped to handle it. Also, if there is any spillage... 2. I don't want it on any of us if you catch my drift. I am spicy enough.

I am thinking 8-10 gallons... should do the basic perimeter and the gazebo. :) Ohhhh momma should love to do this. Eleven years. The bushy tailed rat has been stealing all her grapes for eleven years... HA. No MORE!

The vinegar, murphy oil, salt are mixed. Take off the hat we are going to go buy some serious habaneros...

We'll be back....

'vie, The Wendy, JD and the Momma.
[told you JD would charmify her!]

If this works... all that training they have done will be useless! Mwaaaaaaah!

I knew it!

The bushy tailed rats have a training camp! I knew they were getting training somewhere!!! Tank, did you know about this???? Rocky, we have to mobilize! You would not believe the damage the bushy tailed rats did to our gazebo! But now I get it. Their "agility" is the result of training, oh boy does mean that we have to train as well???? I don't schivtz! I am Bichon. I am royalty. Even if I would agree to "train"... I would have to do it in an manner appropriate for my station and ... breed.

The bushy tailed rat ... has the advantage of commonality... You know what? I don't think we can beat them at that game. I think we have to use our God given higher intelligence... and OUTSMART them.

I am thinking strategy.

I am thinking...

USDA 1. USDA Fails to Protect Puppy Mill Dogs
Earlier this week, the Office of the Inspector General released a detailed report outlining the USDA’s lax and ineffective enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) against puppy mills. The report found that despite regular inspections, breeders continued to operate facilities where dogs live in gruesome, inhumane conditions—all without penalty. Read More.

To Infinity!

To Infinity!

Have I got a deal for you!

So, let's chat. What is guaranteed access to the momma worth to you? I mean I could make sure that you get her attention at the most crucial times... ie when she is slicing a roast, or pancetta. These are prime times as you know. I could insure that you are the only one around and with a little coaching from me, you could learn to give her the googly eyes which produce nibbles.

This is a rare opportunity my friend. Not everyone has the inside track on momma like I do. And access like that does not come cheap. Essentially what I am guaranteeing you is "sole access" as opposed to having to compete for momma's attention with 2 other 4leggeds.
So what's it worth to you?

I think it is quite reasonable to tell you that I expect 6 chewies. You can pay me over time, and you can start by leaving two chewies on the desk as you walk out. And of course, this is a matter of utter confidentiality. Publicity would void the whole agreement and everyone loses.

You need to understand that I am giving up something here- my knowledge, my cache, my insight- and that you need to make that worth my while.

This is a business transaction, nothing more, nothing less. And by the by... momma knows nothing.

Your belly band is just a belly band, right? No camera or anything in there?

How does he hear them?

Daddy bought himself this soda can holder. I am puzzled. How does daddy hear the voices in momma's head? And does she know he can hear them? Can you hear the voices in my head? If you can, why am not getting more chewies????

Pixie

Sometimes, you hear about someone's life and quotes from an old movie come into your head, because the reality of that life is such that your mind can only cope with it if you frame it with the glow of movie lights and sound bites which enable you to distance yourself long enough to comprehend it without drowning in the pain and despair of the moment.

Tennessee Williams' Streetcar Named Desire

Enter Pixie. A blind, 14 year old female Bichon Frise. 9 lbs, in very poor health. Used by a "breeder" who made lots of money off of her by selling her puppies. Then given or sold to an elderly couple who owned her for a full 4 months before they dumped her at the Norfolk SPCA to be euthanized. Apparently none of the money Pixie's puppies sold for, went for any care for Pixie. NONE. No room for compassion in greed. Her neglect was as apparent as the abuse. And yet Pixie still loves people.

Blanche DuBois:
"Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable! It is the one unforgivable thing, in my opinion"

Blanche DuBois:
"Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Enter- the heros. And it took many many heros to change Pixie's fate:
Dr. Alexander Jeffers from Norfolk SPCA who refused to euthanize Pixie.
Kari from Norfolk SPCA, for recognizing Pixie was extremely people dependent and carrying her around with her so she wouldn't be alone, loving her and bonding with her.
Kasha, our wonderful trainer for telling Tidewater Bichon F
rise Rescue about Pixie.
Robin Gray of TBFR for making absolutely certain everyone knew about PIxie and saving yet another precious life through this wonderful group. But who could make room for Pixie???

Ultimately not one but two heros stepped forward to rescue Pixie.
Auntie Linda, Lady and Peanut's mom called the SPCA ready, willing and able to adopt Pixie and was told that a staff member might adopt Pixie. Later that day, Auntie Kay, Maggie and Baby's mom called the SPCA and inquired at to Pixie's status. She was told to come and get her if she wanted her. As quickly as she could, Auntie Kay picked up and adopted Pixie to make the "rest of her life, the best of her life."

Pixie was renamed immediately. Her new name, PIXIE reflects her magical spark.

Pixie is now receiving lots of medical care, love, attention and more than that, she has a family who will stand by her and care for her with unconditional love .

Her new momma Kay says:
"Update on Pixie: She is doing extremely well and though it's only been 2 1/2 days she appears to be very well adjusted and very very happy. She's been groomed and looks like a little puppy now. Everyone said she looked better already and then Kari came out to see her...she burst into tears when she saw Pixie all dolled up with her crystallized name tag, pink angel wings diapers, pink princess bed and pink and white polka-dot snuggle blanket. Pixie remembered her right away and gave her lots of kisses and snuggles. Everyone was so happy and relieved that Pixie had found someone to love her. Pixie is the most precious, lovable, sweet and gentle natured little girl and we get choked up every time we think of that man trying to have this incredibly beautiful and vibrant soul extinguished for his convenience."

While I can't hold back the tears, thinking about what might have been, I am proud and honored to be part of TBFR and to know Kay and Tom and Linda and Robin and Kasha and Keri and Dr. Jeffers. May their kindness and compassion be re-payed tenfold for they represent the best of humanity.

Auntie Kay and uncle Tom, I always knew Maggie and Baby have great parents, [Maggie always brags she CHOSE you...] but now I also know how kind and beautiful your souls are.

To Pixie's former "owners". One word. KARMA.

Anyway, Pixie. WELCOME. Your momma and daddy have all of our love and support and admiration. And to all my readers, how deep is your soul?

Adoption is not always about puppies. And rescue is about love and compassion.
Don't shop - PLEASE. Adopt.

proud to be and humbled by TBFR and its incredible adopters

AKC opens competitions to mutts

After 125 years, American Kennel Club opens competitions to mutts

! So, the two leggeds have decided this was another silly rule? Hahahahahaha. I am sure they will come up with a thousand categories and a thousand rules and a thousand guidelines, standards and such.
It is what two leggeds do. All that "artificial control" gives them a sense power. Silly, I know... a dog is a dog... is a dog.... and 2leggds are just ... 2leggeds. Got to love them, can't live with them, can't live without them. Pass the liver lips.

When did MY yard become a bird sanctuary?

The mallards have a big mouth. They must have "chirped" up the house and its amenities [momma and her bread crumbs- the pool and the bird baths... and such] to other birds. That must be it. Now we have a new couple visiting regularly. And they are not people or dog shy!

I am thinking... Lucky the cat should come visit for a few days. Lucky are you up to the task?
We serve birds. Daily.

Don't squint at me. These things poop everywhere! And... my yard. MY YARD MYYYYYY YARD!!!!!

Are these ortolans? Gigi ate those!

OBX and the farm market

No words on this post. You need to see and imagine the smells! Yes lots of things to see, but you would not believe the smells! OBX is the short way of saying Outer Banks of North Carolina. We don't live very far from OBX, so, going to the market is a great outing. No complaints, but... momma would not let us have ice cream... "tractor churned ice cream" or floats, or beef jerky.... She did let us have watermelon... In any case, look and imagine my world with all those smells!

I loved this thing! This tractor thing! But I was NOT allowed to ride it... drats.

Yea... we were in the "shopping cart" and daddy put out cushy pad to make it comfy.

Inside the market

Ok... one word...ok 3. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!

For the record... I did not get to taste a peach cider float. And for the record... momma was acting like a little grubby piggy and she got her own cart which she filled... and... when people pointed to us, she told them we were on sale 3 for the price of one in aisle 4. Very funny... there is no isle four.... just saying.

How was your Sunday?
