Artie chokes two for a dollar!

Hahahahahaha, gotcha.  But I do love artichokes. The woman  is difficult on me, she is not always happy about holding out each petal for me to scrape the yummies off of it. Yes, petals, artichokes are flowers. I am just tired of having to beg for some artichoke heart. She is sooooooo stingy....

Can we revisit MY diet????

Berries for Oxidative Stress
Polyphenols, namely anthocyanins, found in berries and other darkly pigmented fruits and vegetables may slow cognitive decline through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A study in rats from 2010 showed that a diet high in strawberry, blueberry, or blackberry extract leads to a "reversal of age-related deficits in nerve function and behavior involving learning and memory."[17] In vitro work by the same group found that strawberry, blueberry, and acai berry extracts -- albeit in very high concentrations -- can induce autophagy, a means by which cells clear debris, such as proteins linked to mental decline and memory loss.[18] Berry anthocyanins may also reduce cardiovascular disease risk by reducing oxidative stress and attenuating inflammatory gene expression.[19]

A "Whole" Diet: Make Room for Red Meat?
A so-called "whole" diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and high-quality meats and fish results in a 30% risk reduction for depression and anxiety disorders, compared with consumption of a "Western diet" high in processed foods and saturated fats, according to a 2010 study.[20] Even unprocessed red meat seems to be protective against depressive and anxiety disorders,[21] in contrast to many studies in which red meat often falls into the category of "unhealthy" food. In speaking with Medscape News, principal investigator Dr. Felice Jacka specifically addressed the importance of farming practices: Despite the growing locavore movement, much of the livestock in the United States is still raised on industrial feedlots, which "...increases saturated fat and decreases very important good fatty acids...pasture-raised animals have a much healthier fatty acid profile." A "whole" dietary pattern may also reduce depression risk, as assessed at 5-year follow-up.[22]

Alcohol: Always in Moderation
The Greeks touted "nothing in excess," a refrain that still rings true: Low to moderate* alcohol consumption has been associated with numerous potential physiologic benefits, including improved cholesterol profiles, beneficial effects on platelet and clotting function, and improved insulin sensitivity.[23] According to a recent meta-analysis, limited alcohol use is associated with a lower risk for overall and Alzheimer dementia,[24] a finding supported by a 2011 study of German primary care patients.[23] Moderate alcohol intake may also protect against cerebrovascular disease, with wine potentially having added benefit because of its polyphenolic antioxidant components (ie, resveratrol).[25-27] However, the health costs of alcohol consumption beyond low to moderate intake can quickly outweigh benefits to the brain, as heavy and long-term alcohol use can lead to alcohol abuse and dependence, impair memory function, contribute to neurodegenerative disease, and hinder psychosocial functioning.
*The US Food and Drug Administration defines "moderate alcohol consumption" as up to 1 drink per day for women and up to 2 drinks per day for men. One drink is equivalent to 12 fluid ounces of regular beer, 5 fluid ounces of 12% alcohol wine, or 1.5 fluid ounces of distilled spirits.

Brewed Awakening: Coffee for Depression and Stroke
The world's most widely used stimulant might do more than just wake us up: A 2011 meta-analysis[28] found that consumption of 1-6 cups of coffee a day cut stroke risk by 17%. Although it may increase blood pressure, coffee beans contain antioxidant compounds that may reduce oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and coffee consumption has also been associated with increased insulin sensitivity and reduced concentrations of inflammatory markers.[29] Another 2011 study[30] reported that women who drink 2-3 cups of coffee per day have a 15% decreased risk for depression, compared with those who drink less than 1 cup per week. A 20% decreased risk was seen in those who drank 4 cups or more. The short-term effect of coffee on mood may be due to altered serotonin and dopamine activity, whereas the mechanisms behind its potential long-term effects on mood may relate to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both factors that are thought to play a role in depressive illnesses.[29-32]
Chocolate -- and Still More Antioxidants
Chocolate -- the darker the better -- seems to help scavenge free radicals and improve endothelial and platelet function, likely via flavanols (such as catechin), a group of plant-derived polyphenols.[33] A 2010 cohort study published in European Heart Journal found that consumption of 6 g of chocolate daily -- a standard Hershey bar weighs 43 g -- was associated with a 39% lower combined risk for myocardial infarction and stroke in adults,[34] whereas data collected from the Swedish Mammography Cohort demonstrated a 20% decreased risk for stroke in women who regularly consume chocolate.[35] Although chocolate has been associated with a positive influence on mood, possibly mediated by the dopamine and opioid systems, an extensive review by Parker and colleagues[36] suggests that the benefits are not sustained, with emotional "comfort" eating actually contributing to depressed mood.

My take away from all that is : How about switching my lamb for salmon or white tuna a couple of times a week? Also, can you get over your fish breath thing long enough to open a can of sardines for our breakfast occasionally? I also like blueberries... I like chasing them... Get over purple mouth syndrome please.  Hey do commercial dog foods disclose saturated fact %s?  Really, they should. Meanwhile... how about some delish salmon grilled with some olive oil and lemon  dill dressing for din din?

You do know, if the roles were to be reversed, I would be sticking to these guidelines very closely for your diet momma. ... Just saying.... 'vie

Vitakitty Chicken Breast with Flaxseed and Vitamins

Contact:
Brad Armistead

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 27, 2012 - Arthur Dogswell LLC, Los Angeles, CA 90025, is voluntarily recalling 1051 cartons packed as either 10 or 50 packages per case of Catswell Brand VitaKitty Chicken Breast with Flaxseed and Vitamins because it has the potential to contain propylene glycol. High levels of propylene glycol in the treats could result in serious injury to cats. The adverse health impacts could be reducing red blood cell survival time (anemia) and making the cells more susceptible to oxidative damage.
No illnesses have been reported to date.

The VitaKitty treats were distributed nationwide via retail stores and mail order from April 13th through June 14th, 2012.
This product is packaged in a re-sealable 2 ounce orange plastic bag with a clear window. The VitaKitty Chicken Breast with Flaxseed and Vitamins lot codes affected are as follows: SEW12CH032701/03c and SEW12CH032702/03c with a best before date of 09/10/13 and 09/11/13, respectively (UPC code 8 84244 00057 2). Lot codes can be found on the bottom right backside of the package.

“We are taking this voluntary action because it is in the best interests of our customers and their feline companions,” says Marco Giannini, CEO and Founder. “We will be working with the FDA in our continued commitment to ensure that we meet FDA guidelines.”

The recall resulted from a routine surveillance sample collected by the Company and the Food and Drug Administration. Arthur Dogswell has ceased distribution of the affected product.

Consumers who have purchased VitaKitty Chicken Breast with Flaxseed and Vitamins from the affected lot codes are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. If the affected product was purchased online, consumers should contact the internet retailer to understand their specific return and refund process. Consumers with questions may contact Arthur Dogswell at 1-888-559-8833 from 8AM to 5PM PST, Monday through Friday, or leave a message at any time.

Witness MY tragedy!

OY! The hoooomanity of it!

Look at what they did to my beautiful signature long ears! Chop happy. That woman went chop happy. I know momma is as miserable about it as I am.

I rest this debacle on daddy's shoulders. He is there. It is HIS fault. They gave me a puppy cut! I am a sophisticated five year old, I am NOT a puppy, except when I want momma to hold me. Then I am her puppy.

And daddy, I don't want to hear that the haircut "youthens me up". Seriously. The mere fact that you have to say that makes me feel old. Males... ehh...

Yes, The Wendy and JD also got puppy cuts. I am not happy. They are not happy.

I resisted my instinct to hide in shame because I am a brave girl. I wanted to show you that I can carry on despite the indignity. I have had a talk with momma. We shall have a chat with groomer. Groomer, momma is ready to scalp you.

Sniff It will grow back right??? Like in a 3 weeks???

Do I have a hat or babuska or something until then?

Maybe my tiara, yes that...

JD is telling us daddy is coming home

So, we had this thunderstorm last night. One of those with the full light show, the big loud kabooms, you know, it felt like one of those rock concerts. Staged to perfection for maximum impact.

Just ask The Wendy. She hid in the pantry for hours.

We were ok, but worried about the Daddy who was driving home in what momma called "the mess". [For OCD momma, a mess is anything NOT agreeable to.]

My take on "riding out" any "mess" is to find a comfy spot and sleep until it's over. I did that. The chosen spot was next to momma. JD was pretty much on patrol. He decided to check out the storm from his observation deck, and he kept a sharp ear out for daddy's car.

Well, as soon as he heard that car [we think it was a block or so away] JD came over and woke me up and riled up the momma and the Wendy. Apparently JD felt that the daddy deserved a hero's welcome for... driving in the mess...for coming home...for...being daddy? We really don't know what the thinking was, but we were not given a choice. That boy insisted.

Sometimes I think, the males in this house have some secret code or something.

As I was all fresh from my nap, I had lots of energy to blitz and who can pass up an opportunity to blitz?

I must remember to give momma the same kind of hero's welcome the next time she is gone for any amount of time.  I must because last night she commented that she gets treated like staff, not like a hero.  And I need to score some serious points with her.  This girl is no dummy.

No way... No how...

Sometimes, I get to help momma in the kitchen. I am what you would call, an excellent barometer of the palatability of a menu.

The woman gets bored easily and has to constantly be "amused" by her food.  [I am shaking my head here... No, I don't get it.  I want the food in my mouth. That's the level of amusement I require.  Not her.  There has to be some ... motivation [????] to actually make it and eat it.
Go figure hoomans. Call me when you have that answer.

Until then, get a load of what the woman has been working on.... and then do tell me if I am right to wonder if she has lost the grip on that tether of sanity which is now floating away like an illusive butterfly.

The "proposed menu" as she calls it, mirrors what passes for television these days.

Heinz  Mad Men Baked Beans    [I know momma... these will NEVER make it in her mouth...  never ever]

Franch dressing  [Breaking Bad of course....] with crudites  she will sniff it and pass on this....

Jim's special Grilled Cheese for PAM

Glee's Mercedes Tater Tots

Hot In Cleveland  COLD Hot Dogs with a vodka chaser

Legend-wait for it-ary MacLaren's Pub style  Buffalo chicken wings

Dr Sheldon Cooper's special spaghetti    [why????]

Drop Dead Diva pake real recipe even...

"Zerts" Waffles served with a rake plain  or topped with whipped cream

Walter Bishop Rootbeer Floats

Weeds Cookies   apparently the ingredients are not season? Pity, I  love cookies.

all eaten while wearing  Food Themed Pjs...

No.  I am putting my paw down on this one.  This meal is not up to standards. It is a bad joke... it is a heart attack on a plate. AND I AM NOT WEARING Food themed PJs...

This menu is a BUST and I am walking away with a look of total, complete... EWWWWW!

Thinks she got the message?

The pitfalls and perils of bloggin'....

Oy the horror. It was mutiny without the bounty. The assistant's assistant... I have a staff, I have to have a staff. I am a busy four legged. You think that all this happens by accident?

I am digressing. Let me start at the top. Our friend Tank pointed out what a PITA it was to have to type out word verification to post. I so agree with him. I am a laissez faire type of quadruped. I am all about the layed back, chilled out, do your theng tude. So I promptly made momma remove that requirement form our setting. And all was right with our world.

UNTIL. Last night, assistant number two, aka The Dowi, called. She was distraught. She was wondering what was really going on. After suggesting a glass of liquid calm [we keep many bottles of that stuff for momma] we asked her why she was as frazzled as frise lettuce. [I love frise, BTW, love it, love it, loves it...I mean it's frise`! Comme moi!] She said she had spent the day fending off spammer comments on this blog. EH? Hundreds...of spam comments...

HUNDREDS ...we saw them, she was not exaggerating. One particular company advertises heavily on TV is a SPAMMER... they make loans. I will only say that. I will be sending them my letter today. Over 200 spams from them...in less than 24 hours!

The rest were a brilliant display of why auto translate does not always work. But the levity they provided did not outweigh my Dowi's distress.

So...  I realize it is a serious PITA to word verify, so to handle this in a more reasonable manner, we are restricting comments to registered users only.  If that does not work, I have no choice and I have to reset word verification to spare my Dowi's sanity. She pointed out that she has a full time job and being my assistant only pays her in licks and tricks. Apparently that does not pay her bills.

Tank, if you have any suggestion as to how to facilitate and keep that girl's sanity... PLEASE SHARE...

Spammers... they SUCK!

How long do vaccines last?

THE DATA

Actually the correct question is... how long is the duration of immunity   [DOI]  provided by the vaccines? The quick answer is the duration of immunity for Rabies vaccine, Canine distemper vaccine, Canine Parvovirus vaccine, Feline Panleukopenia vaccine, Feline Rhinotracheitis, feline Calicivirus, have all been demonstrated to be a minimum of 7 years by serology for rabies and challenge studies for all others.
The leading authority on DOI is Dr. Ronald Schultz, a veterinary immunologist who leads vaccine research and  is chair of the University of Wisconsin’s Department of Pathobiological Sciences. He authored Duration of Immunity to Canine Vaccines: What We Know and What We Don’t Know, Proceedings – Canine Infectious Diseases: From Clinics to Molecular Pathogenesis, Ithaca, NY, 1999,  His research has provided the following:

Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines:

Distemper- 7 years by challenge/15 years by serology
Parvovirus – 7 years by challenge/ 7 years by serology
Adenovirus – 7 years by challenge/ 9 years by serology
Canine rabies – 3 years by challenge/ 7 years by serology
Dr. Schultz concludes:  “Vaccines for diseases like distemper and canine parvovirus, once administered to adult animals, provide lifetime immunity.”  “Are we vaccinating too much?” JAVMA, No. 4, August 15, 1995, pg. 421.
So why are vets administering unnecessary, potentially deadly vaccines? According to Dr. Schultz, the policy for annual revaccination was started in 1978, but it is entirely arbitrary and without any scientific support.
“This recommendation was made without any scientific validation of the need to booster immunity so frequently. In fact the presence of good humoral antibody levels blocks the anamnestic response to vaccine boosters just as maternal antibody blocks the response in some young animals.”
“The patient receives no benefit and may be placed at serious risk when an unnecessary vaccine is given. Few or no scientific studies have demonstrated a need for cats or dogs to be revaccinated. Annual vaccination for diseases caused by CDV, CPV2, FPLP and FeLV has not been shown to provide a level of immunity any different from the immunity in an animal vaccinated and immunized at an early age and challenged years later. We have found that annual revaccination with the vaccines that provide long-term immunity provides no demonstrable benefit.”

ADVOCATE FOR YOUR DOG

ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS:
1. WHY THIS VACCINE?

2. WHY NOW? IS IT NECESSARY?

3. DATE OF LAST VACCINE?

4. WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS? CONSIDER, AGE, HEALTH AND MEDICAL HISTORY AND ALLERGIES OF YOUR PET. YOU KNOW YOUR PET BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. TRUST  YOUR INSTINCT.

5. IS THIS VACCINE NECESSARY AND PROPER OR IS IT "VET POLICY"? [VET POLICY=INCOME DRIVEN, NOT NECESSARILY IN THE BEST INTEREST OF YOUR PET]

6. DO NOT EVER SIGN A BLANKET CONSENT FORM AT ANY VET THAT ALLOWS THEM TO ADMINISTER ANY AND ALL VACCINES.

7. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO INTIMIDATE YOU. TAKE A COPY OF A PRINT OUT OF THIS POST.  TAKE YOUR BEST FRIEND WITH YOU.  GIVE THE VET YOUR WRITTEN POLICY AND HAVE THEM SIGN IT.

On vaccines... RABIES WAIVER new AVMA policy

RESOLUTION  #2 — 2012
Regular Winter Session
Submitted by
AVMA Executive Board
POLICY ON ANNUAL RABIES VACCINATION WAIVER

RESOLVED, that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) approve the Policy
on  Annual Rabies Vaccination Waiver as noted below and related  form in the
attachment:

Annual Rabies Vaccination Waiver
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) strongly supports the National Association of State
Public Health Veterinarians’ (NASPHV) recommendation that all dogs, cats, and ferrets should be
vaccinated to protect against rabies infection. Rabies is an almost invariably fatal disease for animals and
humans; vaccination of animals is a critical step in preventing infection and protecting public health.
However, AVMA recognizes that some individual animals may have experienced a severe life-threatening
adverse event to a previous rabies vaccination that may contraindicate vaccination, or a waiver might be
necessary for research purposes However, AVMA recognizes some animals might require a waiver from
rabies vaccination because the vaccination poses an unacceptably high risk to the health of the individual
animal, or a waiver might be necessary for research purposes. If adequate steps can be taken to minimize
the chance of exposure to rabies virus, the AVMA recommends that such animals be granted a waiver
from mandatory rabies vaccination, upon recommendation of a licensed veterinarian and with the
concurrence of the appropriate public health authorities. The attached “Model Annual Rabies Vaccination
Waiver Form” may be used as a template for this purpose.
Because rabies continues to be a significant public health issue, waivers should not be issued arbitrarily
upon client request and should be based upon clinical evidence that the animal would be at considerable
risk of being harmed by the vaccine because of a diagnosed medical condition. Modern killed virus or
recombinant rabies vaccines have no risk of inducing rabies in the vaccinated animal and are not
contraindicated in most immunocompromised animals. Advanced age of the animal or a desire on the part
of the client or veterinarian to minimize the use of vaccinations (in the absence of a specific
contraindication to vaccination) should not be considered sufficient justification for issuing a rabies
vaccination waiver.
To ensure that the risk to both the individual animal and to public health is considered, a waiver of rabies
vaccination should only be issued when a licensed veterinarian with a valid veterinarian-client-patient
relationship with the animal and the appropriate public health authorities concur that the waiver should be
issued. The client must be informed that, even if a waiver is issued, the waiver only serves to allow the
animal to be properly licensed in compliance with animal control regulations. In the event that the animal
is involved in a potential rabies exposure incident, the animal should be considered unvaccinated against
rabies for the purpose of appropriate public health regulations or when following the recommendations of
the NASPHV Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control. All rabies vaccination waivers
should be reconsidered at least yearly and, if appropriate, may be renewed on an annual basis following a
reassessment of the animal’s condition.
Although the AVMA supports the existence of a process for issuing waivers of rabies vaccination
requirements in every jurisdiction, this policy should not be construed as justification for failing to
vaccinate animals for rabies in jurisdictions where such vaccination is required by law and no waiver or
delay process exists.
Statement about the Resolution
Following a request from the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents (COBTA) Executive Board
liaison over a year ago that the AVMA consider a policy on rabies vaccination exemptions due to preexisting
medical conditions and an accompanying model certificate, the Council on Public Health and
Regulatory Veterinary Medicine (CPHRVM) has worked diligently with multiple entities to develop a policy
to address exemptions from mandatory rabies vaccination requirements.

Zen master JD, what is your advice?

"Upholstery my children. Always. It is all about comfort" JD

Happy dance time! Quincy!!!

Quincy got himself a new family!  A forever family! And you know what? I am busting out with joy! I had the privilege of watching him with his new momma. I know he knew who she was. And I know he was thrilled to be going home with her, and I know how much she wanted him to go home with her.   :)  I love it when a plan comes together!

When a senior dog finds a forever home, it is a love fest.

Quincy, we love you, stay in touch and CONGRATS!!!

To Quincy's new family: What had to be HAD to be. He was meant to be with you. :)  Welcome to our TBFR family.

VERY Bad News for Raw Feeders

ARE THEY SERIOUS?

I suppose healthy dogs cuts down their income level.

Yes I am being sarcastically accurate....

Wait. Who is sponsoring their meeting? Should I say... wait, wait, don't tell... the dog food companies????
The same people who are putting out garbage in fancy packages and sending coupons because smart people are not buying the processed caca???

Ohhhhh that makes sense.  Just like the "incentive" programs for Rymadil use. {Don't get me started on that}

FOLLOWWWWWW THE $$$$$$$$ and you will find true motives.

Personally I want vets whose education was not wholly packaged by the dog food company and whose understanding of canine nutrition is not a derivative of an incentive program. How about a REAL nutritional education???

The goal should be to keep me healthy, not to make me a patient for life.  WELL CARE not DISEASE PROCESS!!!!

I am so mad,  I need to go cool off....
