The lack logic, the total lack of logic, really it's insane. Nine million dogs are killed yearly and our own government is spending 4,535 dollars per dog while admitting that:
"Males and females ages 12 months to 36 months are eligible. The department is looking for Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds, Dutch shepherds, Belgian Malinois "or other working, herding or sporting breeds with prior approval."Homeland Security says no training is necessary — their experts will handle that. But the candidates must be "alert, active, outgoing, confident" and "extremely tolerant of people," according to the solicitation, which sets a July 23 deadline."So, why are they NOT looking into shelters and rescues???? Do you mean to tell me that NO shelter dog or rescue dog meets that criteria????? ARE YOU SERIOUS??
Who is making a kickback from this? I have to ask.

I'm a firm believer that all 4leggeds should have the opportunity for satisfying work. Apparently I am already too old for the security gig (what, you think you can't teach an "old" dog new tricks??? -- hmmm, they obviously have never met a bichon!) I also think it is ridiculous to be spending such huge sums of money when there are so many of us pining in shelters! Plus they say that no prior experience is necessary. Come on guys wake up and smell the kibble! cappuccino or whatever wakes you up.
While I am quite proud of our cousins who do this work, I am sure that there are many others who would love to serve their country instead of being jailed through no fault of their own, except for being unwanted.

It saddens me to read so many posts about dogs being euthanized for no particular reason...or so many that are up for adoption...honestly....it just makes me so sad. Rescue is wonderful...so many sweet, sweet dogs that just need an owner to love them.
