About Our Rescue Group

Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue is an independent rescue that follows the Best Practice Guidelines and Standards as set forth by the Bichon Frise Club of America. We are a 501(c) 3 non-profit, tax-exempt, volunteer organization incorporated in the state of Virginia. Our primary mission is to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of Bichons and to the control of the animal population by spaying and neutering all Bichons before they are placed into new homes.
We are committed to placing Bichons only in homes where they will receive good, loving and humane treatment.
We serve southeastern and central Virginia, as well as the northeastern area of North Carolina.

Only approved applicants, by appointment or invitation, may come out to White Dog Cottage to meet the Bichons. This is for our safety and the safety of the dogs.

Our Adoption Process

ADOPTION GUIDELINES:
1. The adoption application is the first step in our adoption process. We require all applicants to submit an application for adoption. We strive to make a good match between the dog and the adoptive home. The application is a good tool that helps us to do this.. We must receive a completed questionnaire from you before we can discuss specific adoption opportunities. 2. We restrict our placements to persons or families without small children (under 8 yrs of age) and who live within 100 miles of Norfolk, VA. We do a home check prior to adoption and follow-up visits after adoptions to be sure it's a good pairing and the dog and adopters are happy. Our adopters must be geographically accessible.
3. Since we've found small companion dogs require a great deal of time and attention in order to be happy, and due to the housetraining difficulties inherent in this breed, we are careful to place our rescues in homes where there will be maximum companionship. We do not adopt to persons who are out of the home all day. This policy saves us from having dissatisfied adopters and unhappy dogs that begin “acting out” due to fear, loneliness and boredom.
4. Our adoption fee is $250 for adult dogs, $300 for dogs under 1 yr old. This helps offset the dog's veterinary care.

What is the difference between adopting a dog or puppy versus getting dogs for sale or puppies for sale from a dog breeder? When someone is breeding puppies, they are creating new dogs who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog or puppy and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale from a puppy breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs who must find homes. So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog or adopt a puppy at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
