Scratch and SNIFF

So when I hear those two words I am thinking 4legged. I mean scratch... sniff... something we 4 leggeds love to do. Right? And how many times has your 2legged stopped you from scratching and sniffing? Hmmm if I only had a chewie for every NO I ever got... I would be buried under the chewies.

Well, let me tell you something. I discovered this yesterday. Took me a while to actually process what was happening. But of all the hypocrisies this one takes the bone! 2legged, humans.... scratch and sniff. Oh yuh. I promise you they do. And they do it openly and nobody stops them!

I watched momma yesterday. Her mail came in and she opened up her floppy books she calls magazines. Went right to the itty bitty papers in between and pulled them out and in a matter of seconds she had torn open, scratched and sniffed every single one. And then she repeated the whole ritual. Momma scratches and sniffs. Also, our neighbor scratches and sniffs. I watched her do the same thing... When daddy got home momma made him scratch and sniff...and get this...
they comment on each sniffed paper! "Too floral" "Too citrusy" "Ewww like bug spray" and then they re-sniff!!! Bizzarre ha?

Honestly I was befuddled. I am told NO NO NO NO NO for that very same activity- Yet... they do it. The way I see it the only difference between our scratching and sniffing and theirs, is the object or entity being scratched and sniffed. We do not limit ourselves to itty bitty papers... they do.

Odd. specially since you can smell those itty bitty papers a mile away so... why bother???

In any case, the hypocrisy is what gets me. The next time I am told no in the middle of a great scratch and sniff fest.... I am finding one of those itty bitty papers and shoving it directly under momma's nose. That should do it.

Hmmm did you vote yet? Yea, I need every one of your votes, even though the statistical probabilities are not great, I NEED votes. I need to support rescue and give back. Go VOTE!!!

And that is why RESCUE rocks!

CONGRATS TIMMY!!!

Timmy just found his forever home with Eleonora. How wonderful, how exciting...
for both!!! They both look happy and I can't wait to see them!

So, that good news was the boost I needed today to keep on my effort to win the Cutest dog competition.
Winning would give Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue some much needed cash.
If you ever wonder why Bichons ever need to be rescued, read below...

Auntie Robin reminds us :

"Remember Nicole whose drunken, abusive owner broke her leg in 3 places? She's now living in Virginia Beach happy and pampered and loved.
Remember Quillah who came to us nearly dead, spent nearly a week in the hospital and had liver shunt surgery? She is now alive and well in Chesapeake -- the picture of health.
Remember Freddie? Blind -- kept in an apartment muzzled and caged while his owner was at work? His two surgeries became 7 but he is adored and adoring in Chesapeake and fully sighted!
How about poster girl Noelle who had bladderstone surgery and was going blind from dry eye? A parotid duct transposition was done while here in rescue (her salivary glands were re-routed to her eyes so everytime she swallowed her eyes were flushed). She lived out her life in Richmond with "parents" who loved her dearly."

Yes, and we also remember Hope, and Wendy and Peter, and Diana, and Daisy and the list goes on and on and on... and on...

So, no, it is not an ego "theng". I am very secure in the fact that I am loved and would be even if I grew antlers [how cool would that be???!]
But, my fortune is not shared by all dogs.

So. Be kind. VOTE DAILY, VOTE FOR ME, LET'S MAKE SOME $$$ FOR TIDEWATER BICHON FRISE RESCUE!!!

Yes... there is such a thing and yes... there are 2 legged that protect "it".
Honestly it looks like a form of Bichon-squirrel to me. Minus the curls and inherent cutness...

which... makes it a white rat with a tail???

Tank did you know about this???

YAwN....

A study published in the journal Biology Letters concludes that dogs can "catch" human yawns. Yes that means you yawn and I will yawn as well.

Scientists have known for decades that yawns are contageous among people, so much so that simply thinking about them can trigger a domino effect of "contagious yawning". The phenomenon is a link with empathy and the ability to read the thoughts of another individual. That is evidence that dogs may be able to “read the mind” of their owners. DUH. [2leggeds! You needed a study for this?]

This study reported that human yawns induce yawning in dogs in 21 out of 29 dogs showing that "dogs possess the capacity for a rudimentary form of empathy." Ok, again... DUH!!!!!!

Joly-Mascheroni RM, Senju A, Shepherd AJ.

School of Psychology, Birkbeck, University of London, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX, UK.

This study is the first to demonstrate that human yawns are possibly contagious to domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). Twenty-nine dogs observed a human yawning or making control mouth movements. Twenty-one dogs yawned when they observed a human yawning, but control mouth movements did not elicit yawning from any of them. The presence of contagious yawning in dogs suggests that this phenomenon is not specific to primate species and may indicate that dogs possess the capacity for a rudimentary form of empathy. Since yawning is known to modulate the levels of arousal, yawn contagion may help coordinate dog-human interaction and communication. Understanding the mechanism as well as the function of contagious yawning between humans and dogs requires more detailed investigation.

Now here is a very interesting fact... Children with autism spectrum disorders show absence of contagious yawning. {Biol Lett. 2007 Dec 22; 3(6):706-8.}
